13/5/09-Today was one of the most amazing days ever! Why, you ask?Well, today we were booked on a tour to see whale sharks. Turns out it is whale shark season here and there had been multiple sightings for the past few days...though nothing is garunteed. The tour started in the lagoon of Nigaloo national park with a snorkel on a beautiful reef. After, we went to deeper water outside the lagoon, where the whale sharks were. We were briefed on how to go about snorkelling with these creatures and shortly after, our plane (there was one working along with our boat) spotted a shark. As soon as we were close enough, we were given the ok to get into the water. I don't even know if there are words to describe how very majestic and graceful whale sharks are! It was coming right at us and was very near the surface and so we had to swim out of the way. We swam with it for a while before it dove back to the depths of the ocean. It was estimated that this shark was about 6 meters long. I was awestruck. This was not to be our only encounter. Our plane found two more sharks over the course of the day and we swam with both of them before lunch. These last two were even bigger than the first one! One word...and this time I mean it more than ever before, AMAZING!!!
We got in another snorkel after lunch on a very nice reef... Not only did we get to see the splendor and beauty of the whale sharks, but we were lucky enough to see two sea turtles, a dolphin and a white tipped reef shark not to mention a bunch of colorful reef fish and coral!
Dooby doo lost a headlight today and Sam had to chase it down the highway. We now have it taped on.
P.S. Mystery person, out if all my friends and family I have narrowed you down to a SERC person. Beyond that, I need more to pinpoint you.
P.P.S Mama!! Imagine a mini swallow spectacular but with parakeets...we saw that!!!

The adventures still sound exciting, I'll have to look up exmouth on google earth just to figure out where you two might be. The Whale Shark watching must have been unbelievable, was there anyone on the boat with you that had done it a lot, besides the crew of coarse? Except for Aussie's, what nationality have you encountered the most? Continue to enjoy and be safe.
ReplyDeleteHey Adventurers! This experience must rate at the top of your list thus far. We could almost feel what you went trough as everythig unfolded! You'll have to write a book!! (I can proof read it! We wonder what's next?? How can you top that?
ReplyDeleteWe'll be eagerly awaiting the next blog!! Take care and be safe; love, G&G
Hey Sam and Jess! Looks like an amazing trip so far, great idea with the blog. That van is RIDICULOUS - reminds me of a replica Mystery Machine I came upon in Old Lyme a couple years ago. Hey Sam - remember when you asked if I had any travel plans this summer and I said no, not really? Well I picked up two - Alaska in August and Australia in October/November! I'm super excited, planning on doing a bit of road tripping/long weekending on the bike too so I'm not quite as jealous of you guys as I was before (still pretty jealous though). Just wanted to pop in and make sure you two are still alive; I'll be stopping in to check out your wild adventures and crazy stories. See ya!

All this galavanting through the outback, swimming with giant sea creatures, hurling clumps of coral-laden seaweed at each other...it all sounds so "unnecessary, but a lot of fun" :P
ReplyDeleteSo have you figured it out yet?
Sammy,
ReplyDeleteI thought you had suddenly got all "doctor sammy" and wanted to use large words in your vocab like "majestic" and "splendor"....and then jess signs her name at the end. good to see your keeping up your reputation by chasing after van headlights. youre toats my favorite!!!!
....still waiting for a kick-ass shout out!!...
(high five for being super smart, jess!!!)
XOXOXO,
lizzie
WOW! Those were some really big fish!! Keep checking off the life list goals. It's really fun to read about it.
ReplyDeleteMust have been a HUGE flock of parakeets. Were they lots of different colors too?
We're all waiting for summer here in rainy CT.
Love, Mama
I hope you got some pics of the whale sharks. I would love to see what they looked like. From your posts I cannot tell if you are the goofiest or the luckiest travelers! What adventures!
